As was cited in a couple post earlier, flawed city planning can often be found at the root of the "chronic" problems within a city that holds it back in the view of the nation and world, as described here; 20 "bad" cities. Unfortunately, our city leaders have managed to get Little Rock placed among this group of 20 cities not to consider living in "yet".... found on the jump
..found here: "you don't want to live in Little Rock - yet"
Placing all your emphasis on fancy playgrounds to attract tourist, uninhibited and unregulated promotion of expansion, ignoring basic facts...such as the "above average crime rate" (note the key word "average", this is referring to the average national crime rate"), just to cite a few. So, it seems to indicate committing these errors in city planning, apparently by the city leaders, causes the city to loose sight in what is truly viewed as the gems of their city, it's historic roots and "established areas within the inner city", its ability to easily expand and redevelop a downtown corridor and last but not least "it's diversity in population" responsible for creating a diverse economic base.
Yet along with the good and bad comments, lets take note of the "absent" comments. Nowhere do they cite a wonderful west Little Rock with big huge mansions, or how horrible or good the streets are, or abundance of parks and walking trails, or lack of a research park, of how wonderful the dog and pony River Market is - these are conspicuously absent. Yet, they do note the lack of "entertainment" or essentially "things to do". They also note our significant lack of attention to creating a diversity of public transit.
The short of it is this; the study clearly shows that to be a great city that is "good" to live in you have to stick to the basics...it's RESIDENTS! The focus of the governance can never leave any residents behind. They must always remember that to implement ANY policy that benefits one group of residents over another is simple "fools folly" and will lead to the eventual demise of the city.......
such as the earlier study shows we also find Detroit, coincidentally, one of the first municipalities listed in this story, unfortunately, along with Little Rock.
